Because Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom and its inhabitants are therefore not allowed to play for example the National Lottery of the UK or the People's Postcode Lottery, the government is operating an own lottery, the National Lottery of Ireland, also called Irish Lottery or An Crannchur Náisiúnta. The Irish lotto was founded in 1986 after the enactment of the National Lottery Act and started selling scratchcards in 1987. Due to the financial crisis in Ireland, the government sold the National Lottery license on 27 February 2014 for 20 years to National Premier Ireland. The government received €405 million as a result.
Today, Irelands Lottery offers three different kinds of lottery drawing games: Lotto, Daily Million and EuroMillions. Tickets to one of these games can be bought either at a lottery ticket retail agent or online. Different kinds of raffles and TV shows complement the portfolio of the lottery. Following you can check the latest Irish Lottery Results:
Even after the selling of the license, thanks to the National Lottery Act 2013 it is ensured that about 30 percent of the proceeds of the lottery tickets still go to good causes. The revenues support for example sports and recreational institutions, the natural environment and heritage sites, health and welfare, arts and the Irish language. As of the end of February 2014, the National lottery has been donated 4.2 billion to good causes.
How to play the Irish Lottery
The National Lottery's main game is Lotto. Players have to pick six numbers out of a pool of 45 and an additional bonus ball. Picking a line of numbers costs €1.50. A single Lotto ticket costs at least €3.00 because players have to pick a minimum of two lines. The jackpot starts with a guaranteed €2 million, rolling over every time it is not won. To hit the Jackpot, players have to match six balls and the bonus ball. There are also lower cash prizes for matching three balls, three balls plus bonus ball, four balls, four balls plus bonus ball, five balls, five balls plus bonus ball and six balls. The odds of winning the Lotto jackpot are 1 in 8,145,060. The largest jackpot ever won in Irish Lotto history is €18.9 million by several co-workers from Bennekerry, Cardow on 28 June 2008. Additional Irish Lottery Games
Two additional lotteries originated from the Lotto game. There is the Lotto Plus game with two additional draws (called Plus 1 and Plus 2) in which you have the chance of winning a fixed amount of €350,000 and €250,000 respectively. Lotto Plus follows the same rules as the traditional Lotto game with the exception that the top prizes do not roll over. Smaller cash prizes are also awarded to the winners of lower categories, playing a line of numbers costs €0.50.
The second game is Lotto 5-4-3-2-1. It has no own draw and uses the results of the Lotto and the Lotto Plus draws. Players have to match one, two, three, four or five numbers in order to win a prize. The top prize is €100,000 for picking five of the six drawn numbers (excluding the bonus ball) correctly and €25,000 for correctly picking five of seven numbers (including the bonus ball).
The daily chance to win a top prize
On every day of the week, lottery players can play Daily Million by picking six numbers out of 39. A panel of numbers costs €1; the top prize is €1,000,000. The Irish National Lottery is also a member of the multinational EuroMillions lottery. Players in Ireland therefore have the possibility to join the hunt for two- or three-digit million Euro winnings. On 31 July 2005, a woman from Limerick won €115 million in the EuroMillions lottery, the largest prize in European lottery history up to that date. The National Lottery offers a “Plus” option for both of the games mentioned above.

All you need to know about the Draw
Lotto draws take place every Sunday and Wednesday and are broadcast live one the TV channel RTÉ at around 8pm. Players have to purchase their ticket by 7.45pm at the latest, tickets purchased after the deadline automatically enter the next draw. The same rules apply to Lotto Plus 1, Plus 2 and Lotto 5-4-3-2-1. Daily Million tickets are only available up until 8.50pm. The draws are daily, players can check up the irish lottery results for example online. EuroMillions draws are broadcast live from Paris every Tuesday and Saturday night at 20.45 CET. All draws are held under supervision, including the regular checking of the lottery machines and any other inventory. This ensures that malfunctions of the machines or external manipulation do not affect the results of the lottery draw.
Requirements to Play Irish Lotto Online
Both, playing the Irish Lottery online and purchasing lottery tickets offline at a retailer agent's store, are illegal for players under the age of 18. Additionally, in order to create an account on the official website of the National Lottery and play Irish Lotto online players have to be legal residents of the Republic of Ireland and in possession of a credit or debit card (Visa, Visa Debit, MasterCard, and Maestro). The acquisition of a lottery ticket as a resident from another country than Ireland is also possible and – depending on the country you live in – the winnings are sometimes even tax-free. To this end, the internet provides a wide range of lottery ticket selling websites.
Playing online is the most comfortable and easy way to purchase a lottery ticket. Lotto can thus be played at any time at day and night and players do not have to respect the opening times of lottery ticket selling shops. Lottery tickets bought online can be unequivocally assigned to a user account; it is therefore not possible to lose the ticket. Without great effort, irish lottery numbers can be easily played week after week because each line is saved in the player's user account history.
